Building a New Generation of African Leaders

It is no longer in doubt that one of the most significant challenges confronting Nigeria, and indeed the African continent, is the deficit of quality leadership. Over the years, considerable efforts have been made to address this challenge, leading to the establishment of numerous leadership development programmes across universities, civil society organisations, and other institutions.

Earlier this month in Nairobi, our Executive Director joined curators of leadership programmes and civil society leaders from across Africa to examine how the continent can strengthen leadership development through the integration of African leadership philosophies into existing leadership programmes. The engagement focused on identifying approaches that are rooted in Africa’s history, values, cultures, and lived realities while equipping leaders to address contemporary challenges.

For us at the Madiba Foundation for Good Governance, this conversation comes at a particularly important time as we prepare to launch the Madiba Centre for Leadership, a flagship initiative designed to develop a pipeline of visionary, ethical, and transformational leaders for Nigeria and the African continent.

While discussions on leadership often focus on reforming leadership recruitment processes, it is important to recognise that the challenge runs much deeper. Certainly, our systems for recruiting leaders require significant improvement. However, even the most effective recruitment process will struggle to produce the desired outcomes if there is no pool of capable, values-driven leaders from which to select.

Therefore, the task before us is twofold: we must improve the systems through which leaders emerge, while simultaneously investing in the deliberate development of future leaders. Building a reservoir of competent, principled, and transformational individuals is just as important as fixing the mechanisms that elevate them into positions of influence.

If you are a young African between the ages of 18 and 35, we invite you to look forward to the launch of our leadership development programme at the Madiba Centre for Leadership. Through intentional investment in people, values, and institutions, we believe Africa can nurture the calibre of leadership required to unlock its immense potential and chart a new course of progress within our generation.
